The Rev. James Mwangi Kangethe, known as Fr. James, was born in Kenya in 1926. He graduated from Makerere University in Uganda with a certificate in Veterinary Science. After accepting the Lord in 1950, he received the call to ministry in 1962. He was ordained in 1971 in the Diocese of Nakuru by Bishop Langford Smith. Fr. James ministered in many roles: as air force chaplain, Christian rural worker, and a director of theological education. Fr. James lost his first wife, Tabitha, in 1986. He went on to marry Victoria, a Christian evangelist and supportive wife and mother, in 1992. In 1999, he relocated to the U.S. to join Victoria, who worshipped at All Saints Cathedral in Worcester, MA. In November 2003, Fr. James was licensed to officiate in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and went on to preach in several churches. In 2006, Fr. James and his family moved to Brockton and served at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jackie Schmitt. Fr. James served as a voluntary Associate Priest with Rev. Moses at GCB Episcopal-Anglican Church in Brockton, Massachusetts. Fr. James was a conservative in faith and a liberal in action, in perfect alignment with GCB’s mission to break down barriers between people with differing views. A gifted teacher, preacher, counselor, and theologian, Fr. James was fluent in Swahili, Kalenjin, Luhya and English. He was also an athlete and enjoyed playing soccer. Fr. James passed away at the age of 90 in 2016, blessed with seven wonderful children.
